Vertical Press Assembly

$15.75/Pair

Apply vertical downward or upward clamping force.

Presses are made from a variety of high quality hardwoods such as maple, cherry and walnut.

Presses are shaped, drilled and tapped.  They require finish sanding and finishing before use.

Note that the Clamp Pad is not intended to thread onto the press bolt.  The bolt does not hold onto the pad in any way.  The pad is placed on the item to be clamped and the bolt is turned until it presses the pad to whatever it is being clamped.

The counter-bored hole in the Clamp Pads is slightly oversize to allow the pad to be used at an angle from horizontal.  This allows it to clamp trailing edges and other items that are angled to the board.

Face Clamp Assembly

In Stock

$18.00/Pair (Maple)

These clamps attach to any mount location on any fixture.  They can be used to clamp an assembly to the fixture or to spread a component away from the fixture.  These resolve the common problem of fuselage sides needing to be braced against the fixture when they naturally want to lean away from it.  These are unfinished and require finish sanding and application of a wood finish before use.  No cutting or drilling is required.

Brass tubes are 2" long which allows capacity of approximately 1".  They are short enough to not stick out from the back of the fixture where you will be snagging them.  You can replace the tubes with longer readily available 3/16" tube if you need more capacity.  Multiple clamp heads can be mounted to a single tube to use them as more conventional bar-type clamps.  In that capacity they can also be mounted to a fixture and spaced in pairs to hold fuselage formers and similar items at the correct spacing.

Fixture Face Clamps shown below are finished with linseed oil (Tried & True Original Wood Finish available from Lee Valley Tools and other wood worker's supply sources).

When finishing these items you can use any finish you like.  However you should use a non-building finish inside the holes the brass tube slides through.  The hole is a precision fit.  So if you use a polyurethane finish, for example, leave the inside of the holes unfinished.  After the finish has cured use furniture paste wax to finish off the holes.  That will allow the tubes to slide easily as intended.

Also be aware that the clamp heads should not be over-tightened or they may break.  Just snug them with the hex wrench for a good grip on the tube and that's all that is needed.  Slide the clamp head assembly in the mounting block to clamp whatever assembly against the fixture face and tighten the nylon thumb screw to hold it in place.

Each magnet assembly includes a pair of steel poles (steel plates).  Use with poles to apply strong horizontal clamping to a structure.  Remove the plates for normal duty use such as holding ribs vertical to the board or pressing leading and trailing edges against ribs during glue-up.

Plates are held in place magnetically.  Magnets have a hole that will fit up to a 10-24 bolt.  10-32 hardware is too large for the hole.

Note: I have not found any glue that holds the magnets to the plates very long and I've tried several — cheap and expensive epoxies, cyanoacrylates, silicones, etc.  I've cleaned and degreased the plates well and roughed them to increase gripping strength.  Nothing seems to work.  But gluing the plates hasn't been necessary.  They hold together fine by magnetic force.

1-3/4 Knurled Brass Vertical Press Bolt

$5.00/Pair

Brass press bolts give the entire system a touch of class particularly when the wood pieces have a nice satin finish.

I have searched for these bolts for years and my conclusion is that nobody makes them.  So I did something about that.

An excellent local machinist made 2-3/4" bolts for me.  They are beautifully machined with coarse knurled heads.

The knurled head allows you to turn the bolt in and out much faster than the standard thumb screw.

So yeah... I made them all shiny for the photos but they won't be like that when you get them.  However, I do include a swab of brass polish so you can shine yours if you want to.  You'll only do it once though.  Then you'll decide it's too much trouble and live with tarnished bolts.  They're still great to use.

Airfield Models 3D Xtreme Cutting Edge State-of-the-Art Analog Multi-Purpose Dual-Grit Seriously Awesome and Distinguished Yet Sadly Underrated Sanding Block.

(I've heard the trees in the Rain Forests frighten their young with stories of the Balsa Slayer Sanding Block from the Magnetic Fixture Guy in Florida.  Adult balsa trees are really mean to their kids.  But we chop them up and turn them in to model airplanes, so who are we to judge, right?)

$5.50/Ea.

Sanding block is faced with
120 Grit Sandpaper on side
and 180 Grit on the other.
